Continuous Poker Better Strategies
Continuation betting is an important concept for beginning poker players in Texas Holdem. After you have made a raise pre-flop, a continuation bet is a bet after the flop that simply continues your pre-flop aggression that is about half the size of the pot. Its purpose is to continue the idea that you have a strong hand and to knock people out who have weak hands that may check and see the turn. The bet size should be big enough to show strength but small enough that you can get away from the hand if you are raised and believe that you are behind in the hand.
You can also watch for continuation bets from other players. For instance, you have QJ suited in the big blind and the button raises three times the big blind and you call. The flop comes J-J-9. You almost definitely have the best hand, but you can check over to your opponent who may throw out a continuation bet as a result of their pre-flop aggression. The same can be true if you don’t hit your hand. In the same hand if the flop came 8-7-4 your hand hasn’t improved, but it is likely your opponent didn’t hit his hand either, so you might try check-raising to steal the pot away from a continuation bet. Be creative and see what moves you can make. Adding moves like this to your game can improve your chances of winning against less skilled opponents.
