Fly Fishing The Devil’s River
I am going to tell you about one of my favorite places to go fishing in the world. It’s the cleanest river in Texas… the beautiful Devil’s River. If you put in a kayak at Baker’s Crossing you are in heaven. There is great fly fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass. You can also successfully wade many parts of the river. The Devil’s River has some monster catfish too if fishing stinkbait with a spinning rod is your thing. I like to camp right alongside the Devil’s river and fish and swim during the day. There are some fun places to camp right where the river crosses highway 163 (Juno Road).
I would recommend bringing some streamers (clousers minnows, wooly streamers, etc.) and fishing upstream of the bridge. Fly fishing the Devil’s River is tremendous fun. If you decide to do an overnight trip down the river be sure to be careful for the rapids. Also all the land out there is private so you need to make sure that you don’t run into a grumpy rancher too. Another thing to watch out for are the snakes. There’s rattlesnakes, coral snakes and copperheads out there. Water snakes are pretty common in the river but those aren’t dangerous. I have run into many diamondback rattlesnakes out there though and have actually seen someone get bitten by a coral snake.
